What is the Difference Between Duplicating a Layer and Merging Layers?
Layer duplication is when you make a copy of an existing layer in your document. Layer merging is when you merge two or more layers in the same document.
Duplicating a Layer
The most common way to duplicate an existing layer is with the Duplicate Layer button on the Layers panel. With this method, you are essentially making a copy of that layer with all its properties intact. This means that it will also have its own unique name and color, making it appear separate from the original layer below it on the Layers panel. When transferring data between layers, it’s best to use this method instead of merging layers because all the data will be transferred over.
What is Merging Layers in Photoshop
For centuries, artists have used the technique of layering to create depth in their work. Artists are able to create this depth without using any additional materials or tools. Merging layers is a skill that allows you to place multiple images on top of each other, creating an illusion of depth and texture.
What is Layer Duplication and Why Does it Matter in Photoshop?
Layer duplication is a process that copies a layer and pastes it on a different layer. It can be useful when you want to work on multiple layers without turning them off.
Layer duplication is a feature of Photoshop that lets you duplicate any layer and paste it on a different layer. This allows you to work with two or more layers at the same time without turning them off, as well as simplify the process of editing, comparing, and undoing changes.
It’s important to know some of the limitations of Layer Duplication before you start using this feature, as some effects cannot be achieved that way or some changes may not undo properly.

Duplicate Layer:
Step 1: Create a new layer by pressing Command+Shift+N or by clicking on New Layer in the Layers palette.
Step 2: Now click on the thumbnail at the bottom of your Layers palette and choose Duplicate Layer from the drop-down menu. The word ‘Layer 1’ will now appear above your original image instead of ‘Layer 0’.
